CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS and/or EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

An Exhibition of Contemporary Visual Art will be held at the Sheraton Pattaya Resort November 2008 – January 2009, curated by Brian Curtin in conjunction with Gallery Opium, Pattaya.

Introduction
The Sheraton Pattaya Resort has kindly agreed to an extensive exhibition of contemporary visual art to be held throughout their premises during the dates mentioned above. The curator Brian Curtin, in partnership with Gallery Opium, is currently seeking proposals for artworks to be showcased. Full details of submission requirements are below. Proposals will be reviewed and selected by a committee consisting of Brian, Alan Kirkland- Roath, a British-born watercolorist and founder of Gallery Opium, Val McCubbin, a visual art consultant and lecturer in Bangkok, Ingrid Van der Heyden, a Belgian-born artist and arts organizer based in Pattaya, and Dietmar Koegerl, GM of the Sheraton Pattaya Resort. The committee will be chaired by Brian, who reserves the right of final selection. A number of specially invited artists will be included.

Curatorial Statement
Globalization, rapid development, capitalization, cultural identity, indigenous traditions, local values and trans-national influence, political instability; these terms circulate around ideas of what it means to live in Thailand today. The city of Pattaya is partly at the forefront of these considerations given the city’s long-standing status as a tourist and expatriate hub and site of advanced commercial development.

What can these terms mean if we consider them in a subtle and nuanced manner outside of political affiliations and declarations? In fact, how may these terms be considered in a subtle and nuanced manner? In the first instance, we should surely abandon simplistic oppositions such as good/bad.

New Ecologies asks artists to look at Pattaya and, by implication, Thailand in terms of nonpartisan considerations of development and tradition. Moreover, the exhibition seeks to explore the national and international image of Pattaya as symbol and site. How does, and can, this city function as a microcosm of the major issues affecting contemporary Thailand? New Ecologies is precisely concerned with looking askew, looking awry; taking an oblique look at what we might think we know. The artists included are drawn from expatriate and national communities, are trained and untrained and work in a variety of media.

Submission Requirements
All media will be considered (including performance and video). All artworks are to be original, never shown before in Pattaya, and preferably recent. Artists may submit existing artworks or propose new and/or site-specific artworks. An introduction to the spaces of the Sheraton Pattaya Resort can be made on request.

All proposals are to be sent to Brian Curtin at curtin.brian@gmail.com by JUNE 20th 2008.
For artists proposing existing artworks please send 5-10 images labeled as follows: Artist’s Name, Title of Work, Year, Medium and Size. For artists proposing site-specific work please send a 200 word description of the artwork to be considered and up to 5 images of previous works, labeled as above. ALL artists are to include a CV and a 100 word description of how your artwork(s) relate to the curatorial statement. Proposals will be accepted in Thai and English. All proposals will be acknowledged. All proposals will be reviewed in early August 2008 and notification sent by the end of August 2008.
